Gem Tang - Zebrasoma gemmatum

Gem Tang (Zebrasoma gemmatum)

The Gem Tang is one of the most sought-after surgeonfish in the marine hobby, prized for its deep chocolate-black body covered in crisp white spotting and contrasted by a bright yellow tail. Native to the western Indian Ocean, it inhabits coral and rocky reef habitats, where it is typically seen singly and is known to be territorial. In the aquarium it makes a stunning display fish, but because of its activity level, strong personality and need for a spacious, mature marine system, it is best suited to keepers with solid marine experience.

Common Name:
Gem Tang. It is also commonly referred to as the Spotted Tang or Jewelled Tang.

Scientific Name (Latin):
Zebrasoma gemmatum

Maximum Size:
Up to 22 cm in length.

Water Type:
Marine.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Found in the south-western / western Indian Ocean, including records from Mauritius, Réunion, Madagascar, Mozambique and eastern South Africa. It inhabits coral and rocky reefs, with juveniles more often found in shallower water, while adults are usually seen singly in deeper reef habitat.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 23–27°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG

Temperament:
Semi-aggressive to aggressive. This species can be territorial, especially towards other tangs or similarly shaped fish, and is usually best kept singly unless housed in a very large aquarium.

Diet:
Primarily herbivorous / algivorous. It should be offered a diet rich in marine algae, seaweed and herbivore-focused foods, with natural grazing opportunities in a mature aquarium.

Minimum Tank Size:
500 litres minimum, with larger systems strongly preferred for long-term success because this is an active tang that needs open swimming space.

Behaviour & Activity:
A highly active grazer that spends much of the day swimming and browsing rock surfaces for algae. In nature it is usually solitary and territorial, which is worth bearing in mind when planning tankmates.

Reef Safe:
Reef Safe
It is generally considered suitable for reef aquaria, but some care guidance notes it is safest when well fed. In a reef system, monitor for any unwanted nipping behaviour, particularly if feeding is inadequate or if the fish is stressed.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Best kept in a well-established marine aquarium with strong water movement, excellent oxygenation, stable water quality and plenty of room to swim. Like other surgeonfish, it should be handled carefully because of the sharp caudal spine near the tail.

Suitable for:
Intermediate to Experienced fishkeepers. That recommendation reflects its average hardiness, territorial nature and need for a spacious, mature system.

Availability:
Occasional in trade. This is an informed inference based on its limited natural range, specialist demand and the fact it is a highly prized aquarium species rather than a routine everyday import.

All images are a visual representation of the fish you will receive, made to be as accurate as possible. Please note that Mother Nature is a wonderful thing, and variation in patterns and colours will occur — that is part of the unique beauty of these animals.
