Kali Jakora Rainbowfish - Melanotaenia jakora

Kali Jakora Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia jakora)

The Kali Jakora Rainbowfish is a rare and beautiful New Guinea rainbowfish, known in the hobby for its sparkling blue-white scale highlights, soft grey to pinkish body tones and attractive colour flashes through the fins. Previously traded as Melanotaenia sp. “Kali Jakora” or the “Sparkle” Rainbowfish, this species has since been formally described as Melanotaenia jakora. It is a smaller, peaceful rainbowfish that makes an excellent choice for a mature planted aquarium, especially for keepers interested in unusual locality-type rainbowfish from West Papua.

Common Name:
Kali Jakora Rainbowfish. Also commonly referred to as the Sparkle Rainbowfish, Jakora Rainbowfish or Melanotaenia sp. “Kali Jakora”.

Scientific Name (Latin):
Melanotaenia jakora

Maximum Size:
Around 6–8 cm in captivity, making it a smaller rainbowfish compared with many larger Melanotaenia species.

Water Type:
Freshwater

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Native to Western New Guinea, Papua Barat Province, Indonesia. The species is named after Jakora village, the nearest named locality to its type area, with collection references linking it to rainforest creek habitat in the Sebjar River system. In the wild it is associated with soft, tannin-stained freshwater environments, typical of shaded forest streams and creek systems.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 23–27°C
pH Range: 5.5–7.2
Hardness: soft to moderately hard water, with softer water preferred for long-term conditioning and breeding

Temperament:
Peaceful and social. It is best kept with other calm, small-to-medium freshwater fish that will not bully it, nip fins or outcompete it for food.

Diet:
Omnivorous. It should be offered a varied diet including quality fine flake, micro pellets, small granules, frozen brineshrimp, daphnia, cyclops, bloodworm, mosquito larvae and occasional live foods. A varied diet helps support colour, condition and natural displaying behaviour.

Minimum Tank Size:
A practical recommendation is at least 100–120 litres for a proper group, with a longer aquarium preferred to provide open swimming space.

Behaviour & Activity:
This is an active mid-to-upper level shoaling fish that should be kept in a group of at least 6, ideally 8 or more. Males display best when kept with females and rival males, especially in a mature aquarium with planted margins, open swimming space, stable water quality and subdued lighting. Like many rainbowfish, it may jump when startled, so a secure lid is recommended.

Aquarium Category:
Community Fish
This species is peaceful and suitable for a well-planned community aquarium. Good tank mates include small rainbowfish, peaceful rasboras, tetras, Corydoras, small loaches, dwarf cichlids and other calm fish that enjoy clean, stable water. Avoid aggressive fish, large predators, persistent fin nippers and very boisterous species that may stress it.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Best kept in a mature, stable aquarium with clean water, good oxygenation and regular maintenance. A planted layout with darker substrate, floating plants, wood, leaf litter or botanicals can help recreate a more natural, softly lit environment and enhance colour. Although it can adapt to neutral aquarium conditions, softer, slightly acidic water is likely to be more suitable for breeding and long-term conditioning. Avoid mixing with other similar Melanotaenia locality forms if the aim is to preserve clean breeding lines.

Suitable for:
Intermediate fishkeepers

Availability:
Rare / occasional in trade, usually as captive-bred stock

All images are a visual representation of the fish you will receive, made to be as accurate as possible. Please note that Mother Nature is a wonderful thing, and variation in patterns and colours will occur — that is part of the unique beauty of these animals.
