Tank Bred Clownfish - Amphiprion ocellaris
Tank-Bred Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris)
The Tank-Bred Clownfish is one of the most popular marine fish in the hobby, loved for its bright orange body, crisp white bars and hardy, characterful nature. This species naturally comes from shallow, calm lagoon reefs in the Indo-West Pacific, where it lives among host anemones in close-knit social groups. Tank-bred clownfish are widely considered more adaptable to aquarium life, readily accept prepared foods and are an excellent choice for a well-established beginner marine setup.
Common Name:
Tank-Bred Clownfish. It is also commonly known as the Ocellaris Clownfish, Common Clownfish or False Clown Anemonefish.
Scientific Name (Latin):
Amphiprion ocellaris
Maximum Size:
Up to 11 cm in length.
Water Type:
Marine.
Origin / Natural Habitat:
Found across the Indo-West Pacific, including the eastern Indian Ocean, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands. Adults inhabit coral reefs in shallow, calm lagoons and live closely associated with large host anemones.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–26°C
pH Range: 7.9–8.3
Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG
Temperament:
Generally peaceful to semi-aggressive. This species forms pairs and can become territorial around its chosen area, particularly once settled, spawning or defending a host coral or anemone. One pair per aquarium is usually the safest approach unless the system is much larger and carefully planned.
Diet:
Omnivorous / planktivorous. Offer a varied diet of small meaty marine foods, quality marine pellets or flakes, and some algae-based foods. Tank-bred specimens usually adapt readily to aquarium diets.
Minimum Tank Size:
60 litres minimum for a single pair is a sensible baseline, with a larger aquarium recommended if keeping them in a mixed community setup.
Behaviour & Activity:
This species naturally lives in monogamous pairs within a size-based social hierarchy. The larger dominant fish becomes female, the smaller partner remains male, and if the female is lost the male can change sex. In captivity they usually stay close to a chosen home area rather than swimming long distances around the tank.
Reef Safe:
Reef Safe
This species is widely regarded as suitable for reef aquaria and is not generally known for harming corals or ornamental invertebrates.
Special Requirements or Care Notes:
A host anemone is not essential for tank-bred clownfish to thrive. They do best in a well-established marine aquarium with stable water quality, moderate flow, rockwork for shelter and regular feeding. A calm environment helps them settle quickly, and they should only be mixed with more assertive species carefully.
Suitable for:
Beginner to Intermediate marine keepers. Most clownfish in the trade are tank-bred, which makes them very adaptable and widely regarded as an excellent beginner species when kept in a mature setup.
Availability:
Regular in trade. This species is one of the most commonly kept and widely available marine aquarium fish.
All images are a visual representation of the fish you will receive, made to be as accurate as possible. Please note that Mother Nature is a wonderful thing, and variation in patterns and colours will occur — that is part of the unique beauty of these animals.
