Blue Stripe Clownfish - Amphiprion chrysopterus

Blue Stripe Clownfish (Amphiprion chrysopterus)

The Blue Stripe Clownfish is a bold, striking anemonefish with a warm orange to golden body, vivid electric-blue striping and darker body shading that becomes more pronounced with age. In the wild it lives on outer reef slopes and reef passages in the Western Pacific, where it forms pairs and small social groups around host anemones. It is a beautiful species, but it grows larger and can be more assertive than the more common clownfish kept in home aquaria, so it is usually best suited to a mature marine system with stable conditions and sensible tankmate selection.

Common Name:
Blue Stripe Clownfish. It is also commonly known as the Orange-fin Anemonefish or Bluestripe Anemonefish.

Scientific Name (Latin):
Amphiprion chrysopterus

Maximum Size:
Up to 17 cm in length.

Water Type:
Marine.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Found in the Western Pacific, including waters between Queensland, New Guinea, the Marshall Islands and the Tuamotu Islands. Adults inhabit reef passages and outer reef slopes, generally in clear reef habitat where they remain closely associated with host anemones.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–28°C
pH Range: 7.8–8.4
Salinity: 1.020–1.026 SG

Temperament:
Semi-aggressive. Like many clownfish, it can become territorial around its chosen area, anemone or shelter, and it may be aggressive towards other clownfish or similarly shaped tankmates if space is limited.

Diet:
Omnivorous / planktivorous. In the wild it feeds chiefly on planktonic copepods, algae and other small drifting foods. In captivity it should be offered a varied diet of small meaty marine foods, quality pellets or flakes, and some algae-based foods.

Minimum Tank Size:
300 litres minimum is a sensible long-term recommendation, particularly for an adult pair, as this species becomes larger and more assertive than many of the more commonly kept clownfish.

Behaviour & Activity:
This species usually forms a distinct breeding pair, with eggs laid on a substrate near the host area. The male guards and aerates the eggs, and the fish will usually remain close to a chosen territory rather than roaming widely around the aquarium.

Reef Safe:
Reef Safe
This species is generally regarded as suitable for reef aquaria, but caution is sensible. Like other clownfish, it may adopt a coral as a substitute host if no anemone is present, which can occasionally lead to irritation of that coral over time. Monitor behaviour around fleshy or frequently-hosted corals. This caution is an aquarium-care inference based on normal clownfish behaviour combined with the species being classed as reef safe.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
A host anemone is not essential, but this species does best in a well-established marine aquarium with stable water quality, secure shelter and carefully chosen tankmates. Because it is larger and more dominant than many beginner clownfish, it is usually best kept as a single pair rather than mixed with other clownfish species.

Suitable for:
Intermediate to Experienced fishkeepers. Its size, territorial nature and more demanding long-term space requirements make it a less forgiving option than smaller, more commonly kept clownfish species. This is an inference from its adult size, behaviour and aquarium guidance.

Availability:
Occasional in trade.
