Velvet Coral Croucher - Caracanthus unipinna

Velvet Coral Croucher (Caracanthus unipinna)

The Velvet Coral Croucher is a tiny, highly cryptic coral-dwelling fish with a rounded body, velvety papillae and a uniform orange-brown to brownish-grey colouration. It spends its life tucked deep within branching corals, where it forages between the branches and rarely ventures into open water. Because of its secretive nature, specialist habitat needs and shy feeding behaviour, it is best suited to a calm, mature reef aquarium run by an experienced keeper.

Common Name:
Velvet Coral Croucher. It is also commonly referred to as the Pygmy Coral Croucher or simply Coral Croucher.

Scientific Name (Latin):
Caracanthus unipinna

Maximum Size:
Up to 5 cm in length.

Water Type:
Marine.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Found across the Indo-West Pacific, including tropical reef areas from the wider Indian and Pacific region. It is an obligate coral dweller, living among the branches of Pocillopora, Stylophora and Acropora corals on shallow reefs, typically around 1–15 metres depth.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–26°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG
These are recommended stable aquarium conditions for this species in captivity.

Temperament:
Generally peaceful but very shy. It may become territorial towards similar coral crouchers, and it can easily be outcompeted by faster or more assertive fish.

Diet:
Carnivorous. In the wild it feeds on coral-dwelling fishes and crustaceans. In captivity it should be offered small meaty foods such as mysis, enriched brineshrimp, pods and other fine zooplankton-sized fare, and some specimens may benefit from target feeding.

Minimum Tank Size:
75 litres is a sensible minimum for a single specimen in a peaceful, established reef aquarium, although some aquarium references quote smaller volumes. Stability, coral structure and low competition matter more than volume alone.

Behaviour & Activity:
This is a secretive perch-and-hide species that spends much of its time wedged among coral branches, moving through tight spaces and foraging within the coral head. It is far more likely to be seen peering out from shelter than swimming openly in the water column.

Reef Safe:
Reef Safe
It is generally suitable for reef aquaria, but caution is advised around very small ornamental shrimps and tiny crustaceans, as some aquarium references note they may be taken. It is also important to monitor the fish closely to ensure it is feeding properly and not being stressed by more active tankmates.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
This species does best in a well-established reef aquarium with healthy branching coral structure or similarly intricate shelter, excellent stability and very peaceful tankmates. It may require target feeding and frequent small meals, and care should be taken during maintenance because the dorsal-fin spines are venomous.

Suitable for:
Experienced fishkeepers. That recommendation reflects its specialist coral-associated lifestyle, shy feeding behaviour and the extra care needed to settle it successfully.

Availability:
Rare in trade. This is an inference based on the limited number of species-specific aquarium references and listings available for C. unipinna compared with more commonly traded reef fish.

All images are a visual representation of the fish you will receive, made to be as accurate as possible. Please note that Mother Nature is a wonderful thing, and variation in patterns and colours will occur — that is part of the unique beauty of these animals.
