Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish - Premnas biaculeatus
Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish (Premnas biaculeatus)
The Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish is a bold and highly desirable marine clownfish, prized for its deep maroon body colour and three rich golden-yellow bands that become more intense as the fish matures. It is one of the largest and most territorial clownfish species, with adult females becoming especially impressive in both size and presence. Hardy, striking and full of character, this species can make a superb reef aquarium centrepiece, but it should be planned carefully because mature Maroon Clownfish can become very protective of their territory.
Common Name:
Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish. Also commonly referred to as the Gold Band Maroon Clownfish, Yellow Stripe Maroon Clownfish, Gold Stripe Maroon, Spinecheek Anemonefish or Maroon Clownfish.
Scientific Name (Latin):
Premnas biaculeatus
Also listed in some current taxonomic references as Amphiprion biaculeatus.
Maximum Size:
Around 15–17 cm, with females growing much larger than males. This is one of the largest clownfish species available in the marine aquarium trade.
Water Type:
Marine.
Origin / Natural Habitat:
Found across parts of the Indo-Pacific, especially protected coastal reefs, lagoons and seaward reef areas. In the wild, Maroon Clownfish are usually found living in pairs among host anemones, with the female being the larger and dominant fish.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG
Temperament:
Semi-aggressive to aggressive. Juveniles can be fairly manageable, but adults, especially females, may become highly territorial. Best kept singly or as a bonded pair. Avoid mixing with other clownfish species, very timid fish or delicate community fish in smaller aquariums.
Diet:
Omnivorous. It should be offered a varied marine diet including quality marine pellets, flakes, frozen mysis, brineshrimp, finely chopped seafood, copepods and occasional algae-based foods. A varied diet will help support strong colour, condition and long-term health.
Minimum Tank Size:
A practical recommendation is at least 150 litres for a single specimen, with larger aquariums preferred for adults or established pairs. If keeping a pair in a mixed reef community, more space is strongly recommended to reduce territorial pressure.
Behaviour & Activity:
This is a bold, territorial clownfish that will often choose a preferred area of the aquarium and defend it strongly. It may host in an anemone if one is present, especially Bubble Tip Anemones, but an anemone is not essential for successful aquarium care. It may also adopt rockwork, corals or even aquarium equipment as a territory. Once settled, it is usually very visible and interactive.
Reef Safe:
Reef Safe
This species is generally safe with corals and most invertebrates. The main reef consideration is its territorial behaviour, as it may chase tank mates away from its chosen area and may move sand or disturb nearby coral placements if it adopts a particular section of the aquarium.
Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Best kept in a mature marine aquarium with stable water quality, good oxygenation, live rock and clear territory breaks. If pairing, it is safest to introduce a smaller juvenile with a larger established individual or purchase a known bonded pair. Take care when placing hands in the aquarium, as mature Maroon Clownfish may bite when defending their territory. Avoid copper exposure unless absolutely necessary and used under expert guidance, as clownfish and reef systems can be sensitive to copper-based treatments.
Suitable for:
Intermediate marine fishkeepers
Availability:
Common / occasional in trade, with captive-bred specimens frequently available
All images are a visual representation of the fish you will receive, made to be as accurate as possible. Please note that Mother Nature is a wonderful thing, and variation in patterns and colours will occur — that is part of the unique beauty of these animals.
