Red Shoulder Manacapuru Angelfish - Pterophyllum scalare

Red Shoulder Manacapuru Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

The Red Shoulder Manacapuru Angelfish is a striking locality-based angelfish form, admired for its elegant silver body, dark vertical barring and the warm red to orange wash that develops across the shoulder and upper back. In the hobby, the Manacapuru line is associated with the Rio Negro region near Manacapuru, Brazil, and it is prized for a more natural, wild-type look than many heavily modified domestic strains. Like other Pterophyllum scalare, it is a graceful centrepiece fish for a tall, well-kept tropical aquarium, but it still needs careful tankmate selection and stable conditions.

Common Name:
Red Shoulder Manacapuru Angelfish. It is also commonly referred to in the hobby as the Manacapuru Angelfish or Manacapuru Red Shoulder Angelfish.

Scientific Name (Latin):
Pterophyllum scalare

Maximum Size:
Up to 15 cm in body length, with a much taller overall appearance once the dorsal and anal fins are fully developed.

Water Type:
Freshwater.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
This line is kept in the hobby as a Manacapuru form, associated with the Rio Negro region of Brazil, while the species itself naturally occurs across the Amazon basin in Peru, Colombia and Brazil and inhabits swamps, flooded ground and vegetated slow-moving waters that may be clear or silty.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–30°C
pH Range: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: soft to moderately soft water

Temperament:
Generally peaceful to semi-aggressive. Angelfish are usually calm in a well-planned aquarium, but they can become territorial when breeding and may eat very small fish if those fish can fit in their mouth.

Diet:
Omnivorous. Offer a varied diet of quality flakes, granules or small pellets, alongside frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, brineshrimp and daphnia to maintain condition and colour.

Minimum Tank Size:
A practical long-term recommendation is a tall aquarium of around 240 litres or larger, with at least 120 cm length and 50 cm height strongly preferred for adult fish or groups. Height matters just as much as volume with angelfish.

Behaviour & Activity:
Angelfish are graceful mid-water cichlids that appreciate vertical space, planted cover and open swimming room. They are pair-forming fish and may choose leaves, slate or other vertical surfaces for spawning once mature, with both parents guarding the eggs.

Aquarium Category:
Semi-Aggressive / Specialist
Best kept with peaceful to moderately calm fish that are too large to be eaten and unlikely to nip fins. Good companions usually include larger tetras, peaceful rainbowfish, Corydoras and other calm community fish, while fin-nippers, very small shoaling fish and aggressive cichlids should be avoided. During breeding, pairs can become territorial and may drive other fish away from the spawning area, so extra space and visual barriers are important. This is based on documented angelfish breeding behaviour, territoriality and size.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
This fish does best in a mature, well-filtered aquarium with calm flow, warm water and plenty of vertical décor such as tall plants, wood or slate. Because it is a taller-bodied angelfish form, avoid overcrowding and do not mix it with species likely to harass or outcompete it. Stable water quality is especially important for long-term success.

Suitable for:
Beginner to Intermediate fishkeepers. Standard Pterophyllum scalare is widely kept and generally manageable, but proper setup planning still matters because of adult size, breeding behaviour and the need for a tall aquarium.

Availability:
Occasional in trade. This is a sensible classification for the Manacapuru form, which is seen in the hobby but is not as routine as standard domestic angelfish strains.

All images are a visual representation of the fish you will receive, made to be as accurate as possible. Please note that Mother Nature is a wonderful thing, and variation in patterns and colours will occur — that is part of the unique beauty of these animals.
