Clown Coris Wrasse - Coris aygula

Clown Coris (Coris aygula)

The Clown Coris is a spectacular large marine wrasse that changes dramatically as it matures. Juveniles are especially eye-catching, with a pale body, orange saddles and dark false eye-spots, while adults become far darker and more robust, developing a noticeably heavier head profile. Native to the Indo-Pacific, this species is found around reef flats, lagoon reefs and seaward reefs, usually close to sand and rubble patches. Although juveniles are often sold for marine aquaria, this fish grows into a very large, powerful predator and is really only suitable for very large, mature systems run by experienced keepers.

Common Name:
Clown Coris. It is also commonly referred to as the Clown Wrasse or Twinspot Wrasse.

Scientific Name (Latin):
Coris aygula

Maximum Size:
Up to 60 cm or more in captivity, with much larger maximum lengths recorded in the wild. This is a species that becomes exceptionally large for a home aquarium fish.

Water Type:
Marine.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Widespread across the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa eastwards across the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It occurs around exposed outer reef flats, lagoon reefs and seaward reefs, especially where there are sand or rubble patches. Adults are generally solitary, while juveniles are often found in shallow tide pools.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–26°C
pH Range: 7.9–8.3
Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG

Temperament:
Semi-aggressive to aggressive. As it grows, it becomes a far more dominant and boisterous fish, and it is not a good choice for timid tankmates or smaller community marine setups.

Diet:
Carnivorous. In the wild it feeds mainly on hard-shelled invertebrates, including crustaceans, molluscs and sea urchins. In captivity it should be offered a varied diet of substantial meaty marine foods such as mysis, chopped seafood, crustacean-based foods and other quality frozen preparations.

Minimum Tank Size:
At least 1,100 litres, though very large long-term systems are strongly advisable due to its eventual adult size and activity level.

Behaviour & Activity:
A highly active wrasse that spends much of the day patrolling the aquarium, turning over substrate and hunting for food. It naturally frequents sandy and rubble-rich reef areas, and larger specimens can become quite forceful in their behaviour. Juveniles and adults also look completely different, which is worth bearing in mind when purchasing a small specimen.

Reef Safe:
Reef Safe with Caution
This species is not suitable for most delicate reef systems. It is a very effective hunter of crustaceans, sea urchins, worms, molluscs and other mobile invertebrates, and it may also bother clams. If kept in a reef aquarium, it should be monitored very carefully around ornamental shrimps, crabs, snails, urchins, worms and clams.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
This species needs a very large, mature marine aquarium with ample swimming space, a substantial sand area and robust aquascaping. It is best regarded as a fish for very large private systems or public-style displays, rather than a typical home reef tank. One of the biggest mistakes with this species is buying it as a juvenile without planning for its eventual adult size.

Suitable for:
Experienced fishkeepers

Occasional in trade, and sometimes seasonal rather than consistently available.
