CW114 Sipaliwini Cory - Hoplisoma sipaliwini

CW114 Sipaliwini Cory (Hoplisoma sipaliwini)

The CW114 Sipaliwini Cory is a beautiful small Corydoras-type catfish from the Guiana Shield region of South America. Now correctly placed in Hoplisoma, this species was previously traded under the CW114 code and is closely associated with the Sipaliwini Cory name. It has a pale body covered in fine dark spotting, a subtle darker body line and an attractive, delicate pattern that makes it a great choice for keepers who enjoy rarer Cory-type catfish. Peaceful, social and active along the bottom, it is best kept in a group on soft sand in a mature, well-maintained aquarium.

Common Name:
CW114 Sipaliwini Cory. Also commonly referred to as the Sipaliwini Cory, Nail Cory, CW114 Cory or Sipaliwini Corydoras.

Scientific Name (Latin):
Hoplisoma sipaliwini
Previously known in the hobby and older references as Corydoras sipaliwini.

Maximum Size:
Around 4.5–5 cm, making it a small and manageable bottom-dwelling catfish.

Water Type:
Freshwater

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Native to South America, particularly the coastal river basins of Guyana and Suriname. The species name refers to the Sipaliwini region, with records connected to the Sipaliwini River system. In the wild, it is associated with tropical freshwater habitats, likely including quieter river margins, sandy areas and soft, lightly acidic water conditions.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–26°C
pH Range: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: soft to moderately hard water

Temperament:
Very peaceful and suitable for calm community aquariums. It should not be kept with aggressive, boisterous or large predatory fish that may stress it or outcompete it at feeding time.

Diet:
Omnivorous bottom feeder. It should be offered a varied diet including quality sinking catfish pellets, fine granules, frozen bloodworm, brineshrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae and other small frozen or live foods. It will sift through the substrate for food, but should never be expected to survive only on leftovers.

Minimum Tank Size:
A practical recommendation is at least 60 litres for a small group, with larger aquariums preferred for bigger shoals or mixed community setups.

Behaviour & Activity:
This is a social bottom-dweller that should be kept in a group of at least 6, ideally 8 or more. In good numbers it becomes more confident, active and natural in behaviour. It spends much of its time exploring the substrate, resting together and searching for small foods. Soft sand is strongly recommended, as rough gravel can damage the barbels and reduce natural feeding behaviour.

Aquarium Category:
Community Fish
This species is peaceful and works well with other small, calm freshwater fish that enjoy similar conditions. Suitable tank mates include small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, peaceful dwarf cichlids, small plecos, Otocinclus and other non-aggressive community species. Avoid fin nippers, large cichlids, aggressive bottom-dwellers and fish that require very hard or alkaline water.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Best kept in a mature aquarium with soft sand, gentle to moderate flow, good oxygenation and stable water quality. Provide shaded areas, leaf litter, wood, plants and open sandy patches for natural foraging. Like most Cory-type catfish, it is sensitive to poor water quality, sharp substrates and unstable conditions, so regular maintenance is important.

Suitable for:
Beginner to intermediate fishkeepers

Availability:
Occasional / rare in trade
