Duplicate Cory - Hoplisoma duplicareum
Duplicate Cory (Hoplisoma duplicareum)
The Duplicate Cory is a small, elegant South American armoured catfish known for its pale body, bold dark eye mask and strong dark dorsal marking, which gives it a look similar to Adolfo’s Cory. It is a peaceful, sociable bottom-dweller that does best in groups and makes an excellent addition to a calm, well-planned freshwater community aquarium. Modern references place it in Hoplisoma, while older aquarium literature often lists it as Corydoras duplicareus.
Common Name:
Duplicate Cory. It is also commonly known as the Broad Stripe Cory.
Scientific Name (Latin):
Hoplisoma duplicareum
Older synonym: Corydoras duplicareus.
Maximum Size:
Up to 4 cm standard length.
Water Type:
Freshwater.
Origin / Natural Habitat:
This species comes from South America, specifically the upper Negro River basin in Brazil.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–26°C
pH Range: 6.0–8.0
Hardness: 2–25 dH
Temperament:
Generally peaceful and very well suited to community life. Like other cory-type catfish, it is far more comfortable and confident when kept in a proper group rather than singly or in pairs.
Diet:
Omnivorous bottom-feeder. Offer a varied diet of sinking foods such as tablets, granules and quality prepared foods, alongside frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, daphnia and similar small protein-rich foods.
Minimum Tank Size:
A practical long-term recommendation is at least 60 litres for a small group, with a larger footprint always preferred over a tall, narrow aquarium. This is an aquarium-care inference based on its group-living nature, adult size and bottom-dwelling behaviour.
Behaviour & Activity:
This is an active bottom-dweller that spends much of the day foraging through the substrate. It is also a facultative air-breather, so it may occasionally visit the surface.
Aquarium Category:
Community Fish
Best kept in a group of at least 6 with other peaceful, non-aggressive fish that will not bully it or outcompete it at feeding time. Good companions include other small tetras, rasboras, peaceful dwarf cichlids and similarly calm bottom-dwellers. Watch out for large predatory fish, aggressive cichlids and very boisterous tankmates, as this species is gentle and relies on group security rather than aggression.
Special Requirements or Care Notes:
A fine sand substrate is ideal, although smooth rounded gravel can also work if kept very clean. Provide cover with wood, plants or shaded areas, and keep water quality high. Like other cory-type catfish, it should never be expected to live on leftover food alone.
Suitable for:
Beginner to Intermediate fishkeepers. Its peaceful nature and straightforward care make it approachable, but it still does best when its need for group living, clean water and a gentle setup is properly understood.
Availability:
Occasional in trade. This is an informed trade inference based on specialist catfish references and aquarium listings rather than broad mass-market availability.
All images are a visual representation of the fish you will receive, made to be as accurate as possible. Please note that Mother Nature is a wonderful thing, and variation in patterns and colours will occur — that is part of the unique beauty of these animals.
